Chamber Consortium Project

The Chamber Consortium Project

This project is a commission consortium of three chamber music pieces every two years. For 2024, we are commissioning for flute and bassoon duo (one for alto flute and bassoon). Subsequent projects will include a multitude of other instruments. Read our mission below, and scroll down to meet this year’s composers.

There are as many reasons for commissioning new music as there are people who have commissioned.

Our Three-Part Mission

  1. Including New Voices
Each year, three composers will be included in this project, including one "early career" professional of the instrumental composition world. This may be a current student in a composition department, young independent composer, or an established musician recently expanding their experience to include composing music. Each cohort will also include at least one composer from a historically underrepresented identity group.

  2. Making Finances Accessible
Every consortium will include commission levels for both professionals and students, allowing young musicians to access the experience of commissioning new music and performing world premieres at an affordable price point.

  3. Exploring Contemporary Sounds
Our consortium project welcomes use of auxiliary flute and bassoon family instruments, extended techniques, fixed and live electronics, amplification and distortion, non-traditional notation or graphic scoring, and more. We hope that open dialogue with composers as artists and communicators as well as open-mindedness to sound creation will expand our understanding of music.
